Fictional starting situation

The emergency call is active. An adult is unresponsive and is not breathing normally.

Learning overview · not real-time instructions

The three key points remain readable without motion. Physical techniques require practical instruction.

EH04 · chapter 1 of 3

Early compressions matter now

For an unresponsive adult who is not breathing normally, start chest compressions immediately. Have others fetch further help and an AED. Do not spend a long time searching for a device first. Speakerphone lets the emergency control centre guide you while you act.

Key point: Do not wait for the ambulance crew to arrive.

EH04 · chapter 2 of 3

Reference values for adults

Press on the lower half of the breastbone in the centre of the chest: 100–120 times per minute, at least 5 and no more than 6 cm deep. Keep your arms straight; allow full chest recoil after each compression. Those trained in rescue breathing combine 30 compressions with two breaths. If you cannot give breaths, keep doing compressions without them.

Key point: Do not apply adult values to infants.

EH04 · chapter 3 of 3

Keep interruptions short

An AED supplements resuscitation. Follow its prompts and restart resuscitation immediately after an analysis or shock when the device tells you to. Continue until professionals take over, the person clearly wakes and breathes normally, or you are physically unable to continue. A screen test does not assess compression depth.

Key point: Learn the techniques practically on a training manikin.
